Wholestone
Fremont, Nebraska

Wholestone Farms Cooperative, Inc. (Wholestone), a 195 member co-op of local farmers, made
significant upgrades to its pork processing plant in rural Fremont, Nebraska to modernize the facility and
add an impressive 118,600 square feet new state-of-the-art processing and cut floor. Improvements
included adding equilibrium coolers, which allow Wholestone to hold inventory prior to fabrication, and
led to the addition of a second shift to improve yield, increase revenue, and expand quality and shelf
life, all of which will result in value passed on to the co-op members. The expansion creates 800 full-time
quality jobs and 300 construction jobs, as well as retaining over 1,000 positions. 100% of full-time jobs
offer health benefits, dental, and retirement plans and pay above the MIT living wage for the area.
Employees have access to training, career advancement, and advanced educational opportunities
through local partner colleges. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the co-op experienced significant cost
increases and supply chain constraints. The rising costs severely impacted the planned expansion and
without NMTC financing, Wholestone would not have moved forward at its planned scale, limiting job
creation and economic benefits to the low-income community.
